The most important text in the whole of Indian aesthetic thought is presented with a full translation (the first in English). It is a commentary by Abhinavagupta (10th or 11th c. A.D.) upon a work of Bharata (4th or 5th c. A.D.) and is particularly valuable in that it contains a summary of the principal theories on poetics by the predecessors of Abhinavagupta, whose works have been lost.
